Exhaust Tips

Exhaust tips function in two ways. First, the most apparent, they add a bit of style and uniqueness to the tail end of your car. Looking at a shiny exhaust tip on your Legend is certainly more appealing then the rusty old thing from the factory. It's a lot more classy and elegant. The other function of the exhaust tip is it can actually affect the volume of your exhaust tone. The larger the exhaust tip, the more volume you'll get from it. Usually anything greater than 3½" will make your exhaust noise louder than it normally is without one. Keep in mind that an exhaust tip only works effectively with an aftermarket performance muffler. If you have the stock muffler or a quiet aftermarket one, the exhaust tip will only slightly change the tone because there won't be any noise to change.

Exhaust tips come in many types, styles, and sizes. Tips are either resonated or non-resonated. Non-resonated tips are just plain stainless steel tips. The resonated tips are lined with fiberglass to dampen the exhaust noise a little further. Sizes (diameter measurements) range from 2 inches to 5 inches wide. As for styles, there are many to choose from. There's round, oval, square, slashed, etc. These tips will either be welded on, or if possible, clamped on.

You have to be careful having any exhaust tip over 3 inches nowadays in California because lately law enforcement have been trying to crack down on vehicles with "modified exhausts". A modified exhaust is simply any exhaust that is louder than 92 db, which constitutes disturbing the peace. Most aftermarket exhausts don't break the sound ordinance, but usually police don't even listen to your exhaust noise. They just pull you over once they spot a large exhaust tip sticking out the rear of your car.

"These things look ok. Just short (about 4" in length) oval tips. They fit over the stock muffler tips perfectly, but are they really worth the asking price? I think you can find some cheap knock-offs for a lot less."

"The 5" flared GReddy exhaust tip was too loud for my comfort (internally and externally). So after dampening the car with additional insulation and a resonator failed to solve the problem, I decided to go with another tip. I did a lot of shopping around and couldn't find anything I really liked. I didn't want to get a round tip because that's what everyone had on their vehicles, making it so passé. I was very surprised to find that Remus sells exhaust tips individually. I got a Type 92 exhaust tip for $120 at a store called StreetWize Motorsports. The Type 92 is a chrome plated resonated rectangular oval tip measuring 97mm x 80mm. The Type 92 had a pretty elegant look to it, and the polished finish complimented my chrome wheels very nicely. It needed to be welded on so for installation I went to Goldie's Mufflers and got it done for $35.

Unfortunately right after I installed the Type 92, I found it to be too restrictive because it had only a 2¼ inlet compared to the 3" outlet from the GReddy muffler. But then I discovered the Remus Type 09 exhaust tip. I found this a lot more appealing so I ordered it immediately from Super Buy Tires for $145. The Type 09 is a chrome resonated elliptical oval tip measuring 135mm x 75mm. If I'm stuck with a single exhaust tip, I definitely wanted the larger oval one. This still retained a bit of class and elegance as far as big tips go, and added a little more aggressiveness to Vivian's appearance. Unfortunately it didn't come with a circular adapter to fit any existing tips because you're supposed to connect it to the muffler directly. But I didn't want it connected like that. So I went back to Goldie's Mufflers and the guy custom made a circular-to-oval pipe adapter for $35. Then I had him replace the old Type 92 tip I had on there with this new one.

The Remus tips gave Vivian a deeper, more beefier tone than before. Like the previous tip, it's pretty quiet under idle and cruising speeds. But open it up and it sings a throaty tune that sounds pretty aggressive. They have restored the sound and image of Vivian back to an upstanding luxury car."

"At only about $4 a piece, these shiny stainless steel exhaust tip covers are pretty good. They add a decent, elegant touch to the back of your Legend without having to break the bank. Even though they are a bit small in appearance, they cover up the ugly brown/rusted metal exhaust tips of the factory muffler."

"I was shopping around for an exhaust a couple months ago, and decided that they were too expensive at the time. So I dropped by a local parts store and bought two stainless steel tip covers and a can of high-temperature black paint. The Legend's stock tips are oval, but if one buys tip covers with a 2½" diameter, they slide right over, and are tight enough so that you don't even need to use the install screws that came with it. But before putting on the tips, painting the muffler black gives the rear end a much cleaner look. Someone actually asked me what kind of an aftermarket exhaust it was, and I just looked at them and smiled. So for those who don't have the budget, but would like the 'look', you can suggest this simple $15 upgrade."
