Catalytic Converter

The main function of a catalytic converter is designed to reduce pollutants by causing carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons, and nitrous oxides to completely combust by converting them into safe carbon dioxide, water, and nitrogen. The catalytic converter is the main source of air flow restriction in any exhaust system.

The stock converter, especially on the Legend, is rather large and cumbersome, hindering exhaust flow and power just a tad. An aftermarket unit is much smaller but provides the same function. A catalytic converter should be checked after 100,000 miles or so to inspect for damage, cracks, or clogs which will reduce air flow even more and may have you failing the smog test.

There are quite a few high performance catalytic converter companies out there. Car Sound, Perfection, and Random Technologies are a few. The Car Sound converter is a bit larger than Perfection's, so exhaust flow will be a bit more restrictive. Even though that means less free-flow, it also means less noise, which is what you want in most cases. Unfortunately no company has a direct bolt-on replacement for the Acura Legend, so you'll need to get the universal fit and have it custom installed.

"I ended up with a Perfection converter for $180 with installation being an additional $40. The installer told me Perfection was more free flowing than Car Sound, which effected my decision because I thought I could squeeze out more horsepower with less restriction.

Unfortunately at that time I didn't think about the noisy consequences, as I thought I could squeeze out much more power with this converter upgrade. My car is now rather noisy and buzzy during mid-throttle. Even with a Remus exhaust the noise could not be quieted. This was one of the biggest upgrade mistakes on Project Vivian. I would go back to the stock converter but the foolish installer threw it out, and buying a new one would cost upwards of $900. Even though throttle response is a bit quicker and performance gains were added, this was definately not worth the extra noise that came along with it. I've tried to add resonators to my exhaust system, and even though it did quiet my system, it rob me of tremendous high end power. So in the end I had to remove the resonator. My recommendation? Stick with the large, factory converter if you want a comfortable ride. Otherwise when you move to a more high flowing unit like this, you're asking for more noise, but much better performance. When I sit in my friend's car with the same Remus exhaust but with the stock converter, it's very quiet. His noise levels are a lot lower than mine. But I do notice better performance on my part. So if you're willing to accept the noise, get a free flowing converter for better performance. Not by much, but every little bit helps if you're a horsepower monger."
